SAMARAHAN, Sarawak, June 18 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the issue on the unity government and the by-election for the Manek Urai state seat in Kelantan are two different issues which need a unique solution.
Najib, who is also Umno president, said the party would certainly field a candidate for the July 14 by-election because the formation of a unity government with PAS had yet to enter the negotiation stage.
“There has been no discussion on the matter (unity government), we have to go through the (Manek Urai) by-election process,” he told reporters after attending a gathering of the leader with the people at Kampung Pichin, Serian here today.
Yesterday, Kelantan PAS asked Umno not to field a candidate in the Manek Urai by-election if it was truly serious about the proposal to form a unity government.
Kelantan PAS Deputy Commissioner II, Datuk Husam Musa was quoted as saying that UMNO would not ‘fight’ with PAS in the by-election if it was truly supporting the proposal.
On the statement by PAS spiritual leader, Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, who wanted Nasharuddin Mat Isa to step down as PAS deputy president and the Member of Parliament for Bachok if he continued to support the idea of setting up the unity government, Najib described it as a surprising move.
“I don’t know what is behind the statement by Nik Aziz. As far as we are concerned, anything that is positive, we should work for it,” he said.
Nik Aziz was quoted as saying that the action by Nasharuddin could lead to chaos in the party.
On the discussions with Sarawak Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders this morning, he said it was to explain the latest expenditure allocated under the first and second stimulus packages.
He said the federal government would be prepared to consider Sarawak’s requirements based on the feedback received from the BN leaders concerned.
He said the two-day visit to Sarawak, beginning yesterday, had given him a unique satisfaction as it reflected the 1 Malaysia concept.
He said the visits to the villages and longhouses of the various ethnic groups had given a deeper understanding on the1 Malaysia concept to the people.
Earlier in his speech, Najib announced an allocation of RM1.35 million for the construction of the Tun Abdul Razak verandah for the Kampung Pichin residents comprising mostly the Bidayuh community.
He said the visit to Kampung Pichin was a personal request from him to the state government after learning that his late father had visited the village 43 years ago when he was the deputy prime minister to officiate a water supply project.
He gave an assurance that the federal government would support the Bidayuh community who had always been loyal to the BN government. – Bernama
